As reported on TechCrunch. by NATASHA LOMAS Smartphones including the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy SIII and HTC Sensation XL are consistently consuming more mobile data than tablets, according to a new report by mobile data analytics company Arieso. How would you change the mid-2012 MacBook Air?

As reported on Engadget. By Daniel Cooper Remember when people decried the MacBook Air as a dumb idea when it first launched? Well, given the amount of Ultrabooks that are now floating around the world, we bet they’ve not shared that opinion publicly too often. The most recent vintage of the unit gained USB 3.0 ports, Ivy Bridge chips and, well, not the one thing that would have made the unit unbeatable — a retina-class display. No, instead that feature…

Samsung’s next-gen Exynos 5 Octa rumored to have only current-gen PowerVR graphics

As reported on Engadget. By Sharif Sakr There’s nothing we can concretely do or say about the Exynos 5 Octa until it’s in a device and in our hands. It’s all just educated guesswork in the meantime, but that happens to be something AnandTech is rather good at. That site has reached the conclusion, based on “numerous sources,” that the Octa probably uses a PowerVR 544MP3 GPU clocked at 533MHz. If true, this implies that the ARM Mali T-604used in Exynos Dual devices…

Aaron Swartz, Coder and Activist, Dead at 26

As reported on Wired. BY KEVIN POULSEN We often say, upon the passing of a friend or loved one, that the world is a poorer place for the loss. But with the untimely death of programmer and activist Aaron Swartz, this isn’t just a sentiment; it’s literally true. Worthy, important causes will surface without a champion equal to their measure. Technological problems will go unsolved, or be solved a little less brilliantly than they might have been.…

Meet the Genius Behind the Trillion-Dollar Coin and the Plot to Breach the Debt Ceiling

As  reported on Wired. BY RYAN TATE Photo: Kurtis Garbutt/Flickr More than six months later, during a wonky online discussion about the debt ceiling, Beowulf thought of the article and, egged on by fellow monetary-system obsessives, came up with his own clever plan to exploit the powers of the U.S. Mint. His idea to issue a single trillion-dollar coin to the U.S. Treasury, thus letting it avoid borrowing and bypass the debt ceiling, is now much discussed…

The Few, The Proud, The Supertall: 2012′s Largest Skyscrapers

As reported on Wired. BY TIM MALY The tallest buildings built in 2012 can tell us a lot about the state of the world.Architecture is crystallized power. A constructed building, especially a spectacular one, is a record of the wealth and influence needed to complete such a project. Indeed, the link between a booming economy and tall buildings is so strong that economists have proposed (somewhat jokingly) a Skyscraper Index. The idea is that when you start…
