As reported on The Verge. By Andrew Webster Grocery chain Whole Foods has announced that in five years time it will require labels for all products containing genetically modified organisms (GMO), a first among major American retailers. Genetically modified foods can include everything from faster growing salmon to apples that won’t turn brown, and the retailer said that…

The Implications Of The Interface That Watches You

As reported on TechCrunch. by DARRELL ETHERINGTON This coming week, we’re likely to get a peek at Samsung’s next generation Galaxy flagship smartphone, and by most accounts, it’ll have an auto-scrolling feature that can use head movement cues to detect when you’re paying attention to what’s on the small screen, and when you look away. There’s no word on just how specific it will be, but others are prepping tech that detects eye movement with a high level of…

San Francisco’s Bay Bridge lights up with 25,000 computer controlled LEDs Alt

As reported on Engadget. By Sean Buckley For decades, tourists have gaped at San Francisco’s brightly colored Golden Gate Bridge, often overlooking the Oakland-connected Bay Bridge’s less flashy looks. Luckily, the old bridge is being gussied up for onlookers — Artist Leo Villareal has kitted out the 1.8-mile span with over 25,000 computer controlled LEDs. “My inspiration comes from the motion of the bridge,” the artist explained, describing how he designed the display. “I’m interpreting all the kinetic…

I’m Glad I Was An Unpaid Blogger

As reported on TechCrunch. by GREGORY FERENSTEIN I was an unpaid blogger and I’m proud of that. After following the recent back and forth between an established journalist and The Atlantic over the depressingly low pay of freelance writers, I thought I’d explore what it meant to me to work for, essentially, free. Corporate health insurance and a moderate savings account are new additions to my life after spending five impoverished years as an underpaid freelance blogger, sleeping…

ASUS Transformer AiO launching Q2 for $1,299 and up, marries Windows 8 desktop with monster Android tablet

As reported on Engadget. By Jamie Rigg We were beginning to think the ASUS Transformer AiO was just a figment of a summer daydream after hearing nothing of it since our chance look many months ago. As it turns out, we were right about the furtive FCC filing last December, and with all that paperwork in order, we’ve now been granted a formal introduction. The Transformer AiO (all-in-one) is very true to its name, as like the Autobots, it has…

Learn to Manage Up to Keep Your Boss Happy and Off Your Back

As reported on LifeHacker. by Alan Henry You know that a bad boss is bad for you, but a good way to keep a boss from going bad in the first place is to get a handle on their expectations and manage them while they manage you. After all, it’s a two-way street. “Managing up,” as the saying goes, is easier said than done, but it’s not impossible. The real key is to learn your boss’s prefered communication style,…

Silicon Valley Has Hit Peak Lameness

As reported on TechCrunch. by JACK MCKENNA Hey Bros of Virool, I know you think it’s cool that your launch party is being written up in TechCrunch. But seriously, half-naked girls in silver mono-kinis dancing in front of floating arithmetic, fractions and percentage signs? Why would women want to work for this company? When did Silicon Valley become so thin on actual technology that startups had to have “nerd” or “science”-themed parties to have cred? You’re YC-backed for chissake. How much…

Why Every Office Should Switch To Walking Desks

As reported on TechCrunch. by GREGORY FERENSTEIN Man was not meant to spend all day hunched over a dimly lit screen; disturbingly high incidences of obesity, joint pain and fatigue are our bodies’ not-so-subtle ways of saying they want to get up and move around. After piloting a walking desk – a standing desk attached to a treadmill – for a month, I’m convinced they should become the default workstation. Immediately, my daily calorie burn jumped 30.7 percent, and I…
