Honda intros Project Drive-In to save outdoor movies through digital projectors (video)

As reported on Engadget. By Jon Fingas Drive-in theaters outlasted VHS tapes, but they may not survive the transition to digital-only movies — many drive-ins can’t afford the professional digital projectorsthey need to stay in business. Honda wants to give those outdoor venues a second chance through its new Project Drive-In rescue effort. At a minimum, the endeavor will donate digital projectors to five theaters based on web voting; further donations will depend on the results of an Indiegogo fundraising campaign. While…

Elon Musk details Hyperloop: public transit via aluminum pods and electric motors

As reported on Engadget. By Michael Gorman Elon Musk is into transportation, whether it’s an electric car or a spaceship. Today, he detailed a plan to revolutionize a portion of public transit. It’s called the Hyperloop, and it’s meant to get folks from SF to LA (or any two cities less than 900 miles apart) in 30 minutes seated in aluminum pods that are hurtled to and fro at 800 miles an hour in a pair of steel tubes.…

Audi’s eKurzinfo app uses augmented reality to sidestep A3 owner’s manual

As reported on Engadget. By Timothy J. Seppala Ever read your car’s instruction manual? We didn’t think so, and apparently, neither did the folks at Audi. Not too long ago, the firm introduced a unique twist on vehicle documentation, offering A1 owners an augmented reality app that could tell them about the car’s basic functions at a glance. The eKurzinfo app’s initial release only recognized 65 elements of the vehicle — but has since been improved and is now…

Tesla Reports a Profit (Sorta) While Elon Musk Shoots Self in Foot

As reported on Wired. BY DAMON LAVRINC Photo: Jim Merithew/WIRED   Tesla Motors’ second-quarter numbers are out, and depending on how you figure profit, the electric automaker either made $26.2 million or lost $30.5 million. Also, Elon Musk regrets ever mentioning theHyperloop. First, let’s talk profit. Tesla’s net income for Q2 was $26 million, an increase of 70 percent from Q1. However, that’s not using the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) math — or non-GAAP. If you…

Jaguar’s Gorgeous New F-Type Roadster Will Make You Weak in the Knees

As reported on Wired. BY DAMON LAVRINC View as gallery   The new F-Type is the most gorgeous thing to come out of the Jaguar design studio in a decade. So how could you possibly improve it? Rip out the heavy convertible top, make it a single-seater speedster, and wrap the whole thing in acres of carbon fiber. That’s what the Project 7 Concept delivers — a modern take on the classic, knee-weakeningly gorgeous D-Type built…

Driving Toyota’s insane 600-horsepower TMG EV P002 electric Pikes Peak racer (video)

As reported on Engadget. By Tim Stevens Over 12 miles the road up Pikes Peak winds through 156 turns, climbing nearly 5,000 feet to terminate at an altitude of 14,110 — 4,000 feet higher than the FAA requires to flip on your personal electronic devices in a commercial aircraft. On a normal day, people with RVs and SUVs lumber their struggling machines up to the top, engines gasping for air, and then gently thread their way…

As reported on TechCrunch. by CHRIS VELAZCO Tesla teased electric motorheads earlier this week by announcing an event that would show off its curious battery-swapping system, and it wound up being even more impressive than most of us imagined. Long story short, Tesla can swap a Model S’s battery in just 90 seconds (that’s less time than it takes to fuel up a regular car), and you won’t even have to get out of your seat to…

Tesla Battery Swapping Tech For Long Trips Without Charging Stops To Be Demoed June 20

As reported on TechCrunch. by DARRELL ETHERINGTON Elon Musk took to Twitter early this morning (via Verge) to promote an event coming this Thursday that promises to show off new tech that allows quick swapping of Tesla battery packs for extended trips, without requiring a Supercharger stop. Corning’s Gorilla Glass might be key to quiet, fuel-efficient cars

As reported on Engadget. By Mariella Moon Corning’s Gorilla Glass might soon step out of its phone- and tablet-filled lifestyle to explore a bigger part of the jungle. The material — used thus far to make a plethora ofscratch-resistant mobile device screens — could replace some of the standard glass on car windows, according to company Senior VP Jeffrey Evenson. Speaking at MIT Technology Review’s Mobile Summit, Evenson says Gorilla Glass will reduce a vehicle’s weight and lower its center of mass.…
