The next Windows 8.1 update might skip the Start screen by default

As reported on Engadget. BY TIMOTHY J. SEPPALA Microsoft already gave Windows 8 users the option to boot their machines directly to the desktop, but a future update could make the classic interface standard. According to known leaker WZor, the latest Windows 8.1 test build skips over Microsoft’s tiled interface by default. Of course, those aren’t the only changes — WZor also posted screenshots showing that the OS’ power options (sleep, shut down and restart) have been moved to the Start Screen, and modern UI apps now feature a “minimize”…

With Paper, Facebook just blew its own iPhone app out of the water

As reported on The Verge. By Dieter Bohn This morning, Facebook is announcing a new standalone iPhone app called Paper. Contrary to earlier rumors, it’s much more than just a news reading app — it’s a complete reimagining of Facebook itself. Amazon might launch Kindle-powered checkout system and cloud-based payment service

As reported on Engadget. BY MARIELLA MOON Amazon might still be working away on its far-out delivery drone project, but it’s also reportedly cooking up something else, admittedly a little tamer, too: a Kindle checkout system and a P2P payment service. Yes, the former’s exactly what it sounds like — a Kindle tablet equipped with proprietary software and a credit card reader (like Square), at least according to the Wall Street Journal. Amazon supposedly acquired GoPago (a mobile payment platform for…

Oculus Is Awesome for Games, But It’s the Future of Movies

As reported on Wired. BY ANGELA WATERCUTTER Photo courtesy Oculus   PARK CITY, Utah – I never thought I’d ever say this, but I’m onstage with Beck. He’s wearing his usual hat-and-blazer combo, and covering one of my favorite David Bowie songs. Out past the crowd is a full choir — a few faces I recognize because they played with Beck during last year’s Station to Station rolling art extravaganza — and a massive musical ensemble. People are…
