OS X Yosemite preview: the Mac gets a major makeover

As reported on Engadget. BY DANA WOLLMAN  The last time Apple released a new version of OS X, we came away feeling a little… underwhelmed. Don’t get us wrong: We’ll never say no to a free software upgrade. But despite a handful of new apps and features, last year’s Mavericks release still felt like the same old OS X. You can’t say that about Yosemite, though. The company’s next-gen operating system ushers in the Mac’s biggest makeover in years, with a…

Hidden iOS 8 split-screen multitasking demoed on video

As reported on The Verge. By Jacob Kastrenakes The iPad has only ever been able to show one app on-screen at a time, but that might change in the future. In a beta version of iOS 8, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has discovered that the operating system supports resizing apps so that a single app might only take up three-quarters, one-half, or one-quarter of the screen. In a video, Troughton-Smith shows exactly how it works right now inside of Apple’s desktop…

Death of Windows XP can’t quite reverse slowing PC sales

As reported on Engadget. BY JON FINGAS The official end to Windows XP support may have sent many companies into a panic, but it was good news for PC manufacturers this winter… well, sort of. Both Gartner and IDC report a big increase in PC shipments during the first quarter thanks to companies scrambling to replace old XP computers at the last possible moment. However, the two analyst groups note that the sudden spike only managed to soften ongoing declines in PC shipments, rather…

Apple issues fix for major security flaw on OS X

As reported on TechCrunch. By Jacob Kastrenakes Apple has released an update to OS X that patches the large security vulnerabilityidentified last week. Apple’s long talked about “bringing together the OS teams” and bringing iOS features “back to the Mac,” and converging…

By Tom Warren Google unveiled its Chrome Apps initiative recently to launch apps that exist outside of the browser and extend its reach into more of a platform, but it looks like the company has a whole lot more planned. Over the past few weeks, Google has been updating its developer version of the Chrome browser to run what’s essentially Chrome OS within Windows 8’s “Metro” mode. Chrome traditionally runs on the desktop…

iOS: A visual history

As reported on The Verge. By Verge Staff In what is widely regarded as his greatest presentation ever, Apple’s Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone to the world on January 9th, 2007. In the five-plus years since then, the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch have literally redefined the entire world of mobile computing. That world is moving so quickly that iOS is already amongst the older mobile operating systems in active development today. That certainly doesn’t mean…
