Sprint is shuttering stores and laying off repair techs to help cut its losses

As reported on Engadget. BY TIMOTHY J. SEPPALA Sprint isn’t content to keep writing its financial statements in red ink. To that end, the company is shuttering 150 service and repair centers, 55 of its lowest performing retail stores and laying off some 330 repair techs. A handful of call centers have been closed, too. While these might seem troubling, the outfit’s Mark Bonavia tells CNETthat the pre-planned cuts were made with the idea of “minimal disturbance” to the customer in mind. What does that even mean?…

Oppo Find 7 is the world’s first phone that can take 50MP photos (video)

As reported on Engadget. BY RICHARD LAI We’ve seen the teasers and we’ve seen the leaks, so it’s about time to see the real thing. Oppo has finally unveiled the Find 7 in Beijing just now, and as promised, this Android 4.3 device really can take 50-megapixel photos! But as with many things in life, there’s a catch here: the sensor is actually a 13-megapixel Sony IMX214 CMOS, so it’s a software trick. Still, the results we saw earlier were surprisingly good,…

Samsung To Donate $3M To Charities Chosen By Ellen, Says It Was Included “Organically” In Her Oscar Selfie

As reported on TechCrunch. by Anthony Ha So … what was the deal with Ellen DeGeneres’ already-famous, celebrity-packed selfie at the Oscars? Why did she use what appeared to be a Samsung Galaxy Note to take the photo? I mean, nothing against the Galaxy Note, but there’s been some debate about whether DeGeneres, who was hosting the ceremony, got paid by Samsung to use the phone. Well, a Samsung spokesperson just sent me a statement suggesting that wasn’t the case.…

Know Thy Selfie

As reported on TechCrunch. by Jordan Crook When you’re mad, or happy, or looking into the eyes of your sweetie, do you know what your face looks like? Probably not, according to Dr. James Kilner, neuroscientist at the University College London. Kilner holds that you know very little about what your face looks like most of the time, though you probably believe you look much more attractive and much younger than you actually are. Bummer, right? But,…

AT&T announces free, unlimited international text, picture and video messaging for Mobile Share customers

As reported on Engadget. BY MAT SMITH Starting February 28th, all AT&T Mobile Share and Mobile Share Value users will be able to send text picture and video messages internationally for free. However, there’s a not-so ulterior motive behind the announcement (one that’s referenced in AT&T’s own release), as in comparison “other messaging services or applications will incur cellular data charges,” pointing a vague finger at the likes of Hangouts, WhatsApp, Viber, LINE and, well, all the other…

Garmin’s new app turns Sony’s Smartwatch 2 into a tiny sat-nav

As reported on Engadget. BY DANIEL COOPER We like the idea of hooking our watches into our phones, so when we wander around foreign lands, we don’t look like as much of a tourist. Garmin agrees, and has launched a navigation app specifically for Sony’s Xperia devices that’ll push real-time directions straight to the SmartWatch 2. Acting like a premium sat-nav, the app offers offline maps, walking directions, real-time traffic and active lane guidance. It’ll launch in March, and when you’re…

Alcatel’s ‘smartbook’ concept: a laptop powered by a smartphone over the air (video)

As reported on Engadget. BY RICHARD LAI At MWC, Alcatel was kind enough to give us a preview of its working “smartbook” prototypes. The idea isn’t too far off from Motorola’s doomed Lapdock or the first-gen ASUS PadFone, where an Android phone powers an otherwise brainless laptop. What’s different with Alcatel’s implementation is that instead of having to physically dock the phone somewhere, you hook it up to the laptop wirelessly: video signal over WiFi, and keyboard plus trackpad input over…
